What is a Chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a trained professional who diagnoses and treatment of health problems concerning the musculoskeletal and nervous system. They utilize manual therapy, such as spinal manipulation, manipulation of joints and tissues, and other techniques to treat patients suffering from illnesses relating to back, neck and joint pain.

What Does a Chiropractor Treat?

A chiropractor can help with a variety of problems relating to the neuromusculoskeletal system. With proper diagnosis and various techniques, a patient can be treated from certain problems, such as arthritis, back and neck pain, headaches, posture problems, sports injuries, car accident injuries, sciatica, repetitive stress injuries, whiplash, pregnancy related problems, and many others.

How to Become a Chiropractor

A chiropractor is a professional who holds a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. To attain this degree, it takes four years for a student to complete the degree program. For the aspiring student to be admitted in the program, he or she must first complete 90 semester hours of undergraduate education on relevant courses, such as laboratory sciences and liberal arts. While it is not required for a candidate to attain a bachelor’s degree prior to admission to the program, some do so in order to increase their chances of being admitted.

Upon completion of the program, the student will then be awarded a Doctor of Chiropractic designation. However, proper licenses should be obtained before the chiropractor can legally practice in the area. All states require the chiropractor to pass the examinations administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Moreover, some states will administer additional examinations for the chiropractor to obtain a license in the specific state.

Finding a Chiropractor

Just like any other medical doctors, chiropractors also vary in their skills and abilities to treat patients. While chiropractic care is generally safe to use on pregnant women, children and senior citizens, it is as well very important to find a reputable chiropractor.

The first thing to do when finding a chiropractor is to ask for recommendations from the experts. Your physician can give you recommendations, depending on his or her diagnosis of your condition. Consult with the doctor first to determine if you really need a chiropractor’s help to treat your condition. You may also inquire at your insurance provider for recommendations and if the expenses for chiropractic care are covered in your insurance plan.

Once you have prepared a shortlist of chiropractors, meet with them personally to determine which ones will suit you. Most patients find that they recover faster when they find a good fit. Visit them at their offices and find out more about their experiences, techniques and other background.

A chiropractor will be able to help you with musculoskeletal problems, particularly back and neck pains. However, it would be wise to take caution by choosing only the most reputable chiropractic care provider.
